Setting Up Your Own Domain Name
When marketing online, staying focused is key.
As always the reason for this blog post is to share marketing tips and marketing techniques that I am using on my online marketing journey.
This may not be the first thing you do when you're setting up your new business, but it better be one of the first.
Forget about using the free services like wordpress.org or blogspot. Why? Because you'd rather own than rent internet real estate. It's also tax deductible. Also, and this has happened to me, you can spend hours or days putting up a free web site, and then poof, it's gone.
So what is the process?
Well first step is to pick a registrar. It's like the internet post office. You're going to decide on what address (domain name) to use. Personally, I use GoDaddy. I have for years, there are others that are cheaper, but they've provided rock solid service, and I just like keeping everything regarding my domains in one place. I'm an affiliate, and if you'd like to help support my efforts you can click on my GoDaddy banner over on the right and start the process.
Okay....now you're at the GoDaddy page and the first thing is to decide on your domain name. The very first one you should secure is your own name. I've had tonylogue.com for years, and I'm glad. Now you may not find your name available in the .com format. It's best, simply because of familiarity, but you can go with .info or .us or others, but .com is still king.
Use a combination of first, middle, and last, or add a middle initial, anything that will help brand you. That's where you want to begin. From there you can spin off and begin adding other pages, other sites, other activities....and in the process...other domain names.
Currently I have blogs set up for my son's MMA fighting, my wife's bead site, my other training and marketing sites, and products I promote, but it all began with "myname.com". That's where you should start also.
If you need help, just contact me, and I'll be glad to share what I know about the process.
In a future article I'll share how easy it is to create new email addresses on the fly to help you track where you're leaving a trail on the internet.
Also, keep in mind, this is one of those mundane tasks that many people don't like to mess with, but is totally necessary for your success. Learn how I automate this and other tasks at Master The Mundane dot Com.
